August Newsletter

Please remember that the first Sunday of the month is “Loose change for World Hunger day”.  Of course, we gladly accept currency too just make sure you designate “World Hunger” on the envelope.

The Dorcas Ladies are not meeting for the summer months.  But they will be having a “Rummage Sale” August 13th and 14th.  If you have any resalable items you wish to donate we will gladly accept them, no TV’s.

Anne Baker owner of Hair Company on Oakland Ave. has been making trips to New York City to the homeless.  She takes blankets, clothes and much food.  A big need is for toiletries.  They need soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes and anything else needed for hygiene.

Perhaps you have been on vacation or still intending to travel.  Perhaps you pick up these samples.  When you bring them home they just pile up.  If you would be so kind to bring your spares to church, I will see that Annie gets them.  She goes at least twice a month.  She puts her heart and soul into this.  Thank you for your generosity.       Your friend in Christ,

                           Kathleen Crisan

Always remember-someone needs you!

You were created for a purpose, for a part in God’s great plan; are you father, son or daughter, you’ve a work none else can do; are you husband, wife or mother, there is someone needing you.  Someone needs your faith and courage, someone needs your hope and prayers; someone needs your inspiration, thus to help their cross to bear.  Do you think your work is ended?  There is much that you can do; and as long as you’re upon this earth, there is someone needing you.

Something to ponder…

Brains of older people are slow because they know so much… People do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe. Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full up, so to do humans take longer to access information, it has been suggested. Researchers say this slowing down it is not the same as cognitive decline. The human brain works slower in old age, said Dr. Michael Ramscar, but only because we have stored more information over time The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more.  Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem, it is nature’s way of making older people do more exercise. SO THERE!!

We have more people we should send this too, but right now we can’t remember their names… Ha! Ha! Ha!

No news this month because Dorcas has the month off for summer.

A few happenings to look forward to…

Wow!!!  Did everyone see the lovely bench by the entrance of our church?  It is beautiful!!!  It looks great with the pot of flowers setting by its side.  So serene and welcoming.  I even had to sit down.  They will be putting a plaque on it with remembrances of Betty Frye and Elsie Laslow soon.  Our many thanks to our beloved Dorcas for donating such a practical and exquisite item to our church and in remembrance of two very wonderful and special people.

I’m sure we can all agree that our church and the world for that matter have been through so very much with this Pandemic.  So much so that our Scholarship Committee and our Church Council agreed to do something different for the recipients this year.  What they decided to do was give all the applicants a scholarship gift and the way it went was as follows:

Robert Pontius got the Paula Joyce award

Ethan Susen got the Paula Joyce award

Gabrielle Lucas got an award from the

                             Dorcas Society

Peter Wood got a award from Holy

                  Trinity Lutheran College Fund

Congratulations to them all and may our Lord protect them and keep them safe. God’s Peace and our Love…

To the people responsible for creating our wonderful Library downstairs in the Fellowship Hall.  Wait till you see it.  All you have to do is look the books over and decide what one you want to read, take it, and be sure to return it when you have finished reading it.  Pretty neat huh?  Just like a real library. Thank you to everyone responsible for making this real, above all  Kim Kaszowski and her mom Judy.

Worship & Music has informed me that you are going to be able to pick your favorite hymns to sing.  How long this will last I am not sure.  But the box is on a table in the back of the church for you to jot down your favorites and then put your list in the box.  They will then be chosen and sung at a weekly worship service.

We would like to express our deepest sympathy to Audrey Gotch and her family at the loss of her daughter Karen.  May our Lord comfort you and give you Hs peace.  Our prayers are that your belief will help guide you through this most difficult time.

This recipe came from a really great book put together by West Salem VFD Auxiliary and given to me by a dear friend,

Bonnie Madura.  Being it is vegetable time with our gardens and they are coming into fruition, I thought this recipe might be the perfect one.  It also came from Chris Gravatte whom Bonnie said was a great cook.  So here goes…

Vegetable Casserole

4 cups. diced zucchini

1 medium onion, diced

½ cup mozzarella cheese, diced or grated

1 cup of Bisquick

1 tsp. salt

¼ tsp. ground pepper

½ tsp. of oregano

3 eggs

½ cup Crisco oil

Preheat oven 350 degrees.  Grease a two quart casserole dish.  Mix zucchini, onions, cheese, Bisquick, salt, pepper, and oregano and place into the prepared casserole dish.  In another bowl, beat eggs and oil; pour over top of vegetables in casserole dish.  Bake uncovered for one hour.  Then enjoy!!!

Boy is this easy to make, sound delicious, and cost effective.  I can’t wait to try it.  Especially since I am a Bisquick kind of person.  Use it to make pancakes.
